Don’t Run On E: Here’s Why!

We’re all guilty of running our gas tanks a little too close to the empty side. Even when that light comes on, some of us choose to ignore it. But did you know that trying to squeeze every drop of fuel out of that tank is doing more negative than positive? I’m sure you’ve heard your parents say that you should never let your tank drop below a quarter tank of gas and this week I am here to tell you why you definitely should’ve listened to them.

You’ll Wear Out The Pump:

The gas you pump into your vehicle acts as a coolant for the electric fuel-pump motor and when you run low on fuel, this allows your fuel-pump to suck in air. This creates heat and can cause your fuel pump to wear out prematurely or will eventually fail. This may not be a problem that will happen instantly but could be costly to repair or replace in the future.

Fuel Gauges Aren’t Always Accurate:

Just because your fuel gauge says you have 30 miles to empty, don’t risk it. Fuel gauges are not always 100% accurate and how precise your gauge relies on various factors including your vehicle’s fuel economy and your driving style. Consider this as an estimate and not an exact mileage to empty. In short, running on low puts you at risk of getting stranded or being in an accident when your vehicle suddenly stops in the roadway.

Sediment Implications:

When you fill up, sediments in the gasoline settle to the bottom of your tank and the lower your let your levels dip, the more dirt ends up getting stirred up from the bottom of the tank. This means that your fuel pump will suck up the dirtiest gasoline in the tank. This mixture of dirty gasoline can end up in the engine or fuel line and will be a costly repair. If your engine clogs, your entire fuel line system will have to be flushed.
