Staying safe on the roadway should be your number one priority and keeping you safe is one of ours. That’s why this week we have a few tips to help keep you safe if you happen to encounter some winter weather conditions. Take a look below and be sure to stop in to see our team if you’re ready to upgrade your ride this season or schedule your service appointment if your Ford needs a little bit of TLC service! We hope to see you and your Ford soon!

Always check the weather before heading out especially for long-distance travels

  • If the weather seems to be taking a turn for the worst or you’re not sure what the roads might be like currently, it’s important to check the forecast. If the roads seem risky, it’s better to stay home than traveling in bad weather.

Accelerate and decelerate slowly

  • Apply the gas slowly to regain traction after coming to a complete stop, this will avoid skidding. And don’t slam on your brakes, it takes more time to slow down on icy roads than normal.

Increase your following distance to five or six seconds

  • It takes more time for your vehicle to come to a stop when road conditions are icy. Give yourself more time in the event that you do have to stop.

Drive slowly and take your time

  • Road conditions can be very unpredictable in the winter, so take your time and slow down. It’s better if you arrive at your destination late than not at all!

Always keep a half tank of gas in the winter

  • You never know what you may encounter on the road during winter weather and in the event that you get stuck, you don’t want to run out of gas. This is a good rule to keep up with year-round.

Have an emergency kit ready

  • When traveling in the winter, it’s important to make sure you have an emergency kit just in case things go awry. Choose warm items like blankets, jackets, hats, and gloves. It’s also a good idea to keep a small shovel, ice scraper, and extra antifreeze in your vehicle. Also, invest in AAA or roadside assistance.
